In a statement to the bipartisan leadership in the House of Representatives and Senate, the Presidents of America’s maritime labor unions has called on Congress to include emergency readiness funding for the Maritime Security Program in the next COVID-19 legislation. Without such funding, the unions warned that America’s commercial sealift readiness capability could be weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the jobs of 2,400 American merchant mariners who depend on the operation of the maritime security fleet vessels could be lost.
